Nidderdale - is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and one of the Yorkshire Dales to the east of the national park. It is a scenic place for a cottage break. Limestone is the chief player in Nidderdale as in the entire Yorkshire Dales landscape. Strange weathered rock formations such as Brimham Rocks (shown on the right) stand guard over the countryside. The area is known for its caverns and pot holes.
The River Nidd gives its name to the entire dale. There are numerous opportunities for outdoor sports including canoeing, kayaking, canyoning and rafting. Take to the air with paragliding and paramotoring courses near Glasshouses.
The main towns of Nidderdale are: Pately Bridge, Glasshouses, Summer Bridge, Dacre, Darley, Askwith, Hampsthwaite, Sawley and many others.
Tourists often visit Harrogate and Knaresborough before travelling onto the Yorkshire Dales and the route takes them through Nidderdale scenery.
This area is home to several sizeable reservoirs: Gouthwaite Reservoir, Scar House Reservoir, Thruscross Reservoir, Lumley Moor, Roundhill and Leighton Reservoirs.
