Reeth is a small village located in the Yorkshire Dales (UK) within the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire. It has a unique position within the Dales because it is the principal settlement of Swaledale.
Swaledale is a huge farming region, and full of many woodlands, valleys and rivers, that attract many visitors all year round. Additionally, the way it’s history developed due to the Norman conquest in 1066, it is also the capital of Swaledale. It is favourably located at the crossing point of the two most northerly of the Yorkshire Dales: Arkengarthdale and Swaledale.
Prior to the Norman Conquest, during the Saxon era, Reeth was just a little, unrecognised settlement perched on the woodland’s edge. But under the occupation of William the Conqueror, it grew in size to be noted in the Domesday Book.
Much later it blossomed as a centre for hand-knitting and the local lead-mining industry was run from here. Although today, like most villages in the area, it has diminished greatly in size, it is still hub of all marketing activity since the eighteenth century. This small market is still the life-line of the hill farming community.
The village is the starting point for several of the North Yorkshire Dales' most popular hikes, rambles and walks. The beautiful country landscapes offer the intrepid walker great delights. One of the most notable is Fremington Edge, a walk that, after a steady climb, provides good views of Swaledale. This would be ideal for someone who perhaps wants to boost their fitness level, and also take in some fresh air.
The village and the entire area of the Dales has many other festivals, fairs, events that could prove to be interesting to tourists in the area.In the summer months of May and June every year, Reeth becomes a hive of activity by hosting the Swaledale Festival. If you are going to visit the area then it is good idea to combine this with the two-week celebration of small-scale music and guided walks. Additionally on the final Wednesday of August, the Reeth Show, an agricultural event, is held. During 2013 the show is going to be held on the 26th of August, and it is a very exciting time for anyone who visits this area.
Although farming shows do not appeal to everyone, but if you do attend you will not be disappointed. The show is lively, it attracts of interest every year and you will get to view a broad section of how the local hill farmers make a living from farming in the Dales.
