Richmond an attractive market town on the north east edge of the Yorkshire Dales, not far from the A1 and Darlington. A Norman castle overlooks the town, the cobbled marketplace and many fine Georgian buildings. The River Swale flows through it.
It's a town that has known wealth, evident in the many historic monuments and architecture. A 15th century bell tower stands in the Friary Gardens of the ruined friary. Nearby is the Georgian Theatre Museum with an interactive costume display among its exhibits. There is a fine church in the market place and a good selection of shops, banks and pubs housed in handsome buildings.
If you're interested in local history, the Richmondshire Museum recounts the tales of life in Richmond through the centuries, the lead mining industry in Swaledale and Wensleydale. There are still remnants of the lead mining industry to be seen when walking on the moors.
For walkers, Wainwright's 'Coast to Coast' long distance way that runs from St. Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hood Bay in Yorkshire, passes through Richmond and Kirkby Stephen in the Yorkshire Dales.
