The grounds of the abbey are extensive - good walking shoes are essential. There is a minibus service , roughly every half hour that ferries people from one section to another.
Fountains Abbey is a popular venue; families come with children and picnic on the lawns. Lots of dog owners are also seen, the acres of open countryside are perfect for them.
There are various historical buildings to visit in the various sections of gardens and it is difficult to see everything within the space of one day. There is a herb garden and plenty of wildflowers to delight.
A stream flows past the abbey ruins. Sit awhile and listen to the trickling water and birdsong.
