Kilnsey, Yorkshire Dales

If you like climbing then you most likely know about Kilnsey Crag near the hamlet of Kilnsey in Upper Wharfedale. About 200m high, the crag almost surprises drivers on the B61660 as it appears seemingly out of nowhere, usually adorned with a few climbers. Kilnsey Crag  is one of Yorkshire's best climbing rocks after Malham Cove and Gordale. A layby south of the crag offers limited parking. Look carefully to spot the climbers who are dwarfed by this expanse of rock face.

Kilnsey hosts an agricultural show and fell race every year (with a few exceptions). This provides a good day out and an insight into farming practices in the Yorkshire Dales.

The Kilnsey Park is somewhere else for a family day out, to walk, fish, enjoy pony rides and lunch in the lovely Upper Wharfedale countryside. Meals can also be enjoyed at the Tennants Arms pub or local hotel.

Kilnsey has a pub, hotel, post box and a few facilities that make it a possible place to stay for a holiday in Upper Wharfedale. This part of the Yorkshire Dales where the River Wharfe is little more than a bubbling stream is arguably one of the most scenic in the Dales. The best views can be enjoyed on foot or bicycle. If driving, there are plenty of places to stop on grass verges outside Kilnsey.

A local riding school also offers riding holidays or pony trekking which would be a wonderful way of enjoying the beautiful countryside surrounding Kilnsey.
