The cathedral stands in an elegant setting. Low stone walls divide the graveyard, behind the cathedral , from the road and offer a view to the church buildings in the distance. The former deanery to the side of the cathedral is now a hotel and restaurant. It is a handsome stone dwelling and stands behind high gated walls. Visitors to this part of Ripon cannot fail to admire the various period features and fine architecture. There are attractive doors of a distant period set into walls. Anyone interested in architecture will find much to appreciate in the cathedral surroundings.
The old courthouse stands after the Deanery, in gardens with a flower-filled fountain towards the front. The courthouse has a new life as a museum and offers audio visual presentations of the life of the courthouse.
