The Bronte sisters continue to have an amazing following for their books, many of which have been made into films. Thousands of fans make the pilgrimage to Haworth in west Yorkshire where the sisters lived with their father, a vicar, in the parsonage.
The parsonage stands in the main road that runs through the village and is now a museum to the Bronte’s life and work. Guided tours can be booked that give an in-depth insight into the daily lives of the Bronte sisters. Many original items that belonged to the family are on display and include sketches in addition to prose and poetry. A gift shop sells memorabilia.
There is a Pay and Display car park where visitors can leave their vehicles nearby and there are tea shops and restaurants in the village for lunch or snacks.
Haworth has various other additional merits. Enjoy walks around this stone-built village or take a ride on a steam train at the station on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway Line. Steam trains run throughout the summer and cream teas are offered as a treat whilst passengers appreciate the splendid Yorkshire countryside. Vintage buses are another form of travel available on weekdays.
The church the Bronte’s attended and their father preached is next door to the parsonage in Haworth. An ancient graveyard tells the local history of its inhabitants. All of the Bronte sisters, excluding Ann, lie buried in the graveyard along with their brother Branwell. A tour of the church involves climbing quite a few steps so not ideal for people with mobility problems. Visitors speak highly of the beautiful stained glass windows.
Lots of holidaymakers to Haworth like to immerse themselves in the spirit of the Brontes by climbing the fells around the village and experiencing the views and challenges that created such inspiration. One of the places on the tourist map near Haworth I the bleak farm of Top Withins which allegedly gave rise to Emily Bronte’s book ‘Wuthering Heights’. Other walks across the fells lead to streams and waterfalls – all features that would have been familiar to the Bronte household.
