The small riverside town of Knaresborough is just 2 miles east of Harrogate in north Yorkshire. It has a viaduct that carries trains over the river in a much photographed spectacular fashion. People row boats on the river below - a relaxing and pleasant activity on a warm summer's day. There are cafes and restaurants by the river and in town to feed the hungry walkers and tourists visiting Knaresborough.
It's one of those towns that is popular with day trippers, especially for a Sunday afternoon out. There are walks along the river and up the stone steps set into the hill up to the ruined castle where there are superb views. The Tudor Museum in one of the castle buildings recreates a Tudor court scene. Benches are scattered through the castle gardens for a quiet rest.

For a small town, it offers a good selection of interesting places to visit . A walk around the town reveals the former weavers' and dyers' cottages and handsome houses of the wool merchants. Look out for cobbled Waterbag Lane, which as its name implies, was the route taken by water carriers carrying large leather bags of water from the river to the towns' people.
The ancient Pilgrim's Way along Abbey Road takes visitors past the 'House in the Rock' and the tiny shrine to the virgin Mary, 'Our Lady of the Crag'.
Wednesday is still market day and has been for centuries. The town crier is present in the market square around 11 am during the summer months providing information for visitors. There is a collection of historic shops in the town, including the oldest chemists shop which still sells lavender water as it did back n the 18th century, in addition to a wide variety old fashioned sweets. The Lavendar Tea rooms are popular for lunch and afternoon tea and sell scrumptious cakes and scones.
Mother Shipton's Cave and the pertfifying well which turns objects to stone are long established visitor attractions.
